Light Tent – Public Installation – Virginia Beach, USA

Public Art Installation
Rudee Loop, Virginia Beach, USA
2018

For Virginia Beach Temporary Public Art Program, we take the approach of creating an expressive gesture and place of repose and welcome together with the emergent opportunity of creating a beacon for the site. Inspired by the temporary typology of festival tents and the playful geometry of rope climbers, Light Tent is a perforated structure of steel and light, that offers a place of connection while signaling the area to the immediate surroundings. It consists of 8 anchored steel beams converging towards a lit steel ring.

During the day, the installation serves as a welcome area and meeting point for the attractions of Rudee Loop. The perforated structure is an airy eye catcher as the parts merely outline the shape. The revolving bench brings together an ephemeral enclosure of community to enjoy and repose during visits in Virginia Beach.
At night, the installation serves as a beacon for the land, a shining symbol guiding visitors to Rudee Loop. Light Tent becomes an approachable artwork that exudes calmness and serenity in the nightly cityscape. Passersby are invited to rest under the light and enjoy the spectacle of the light ring and the night sky above.
